Collapsed bite restoration rebuilds teeth that have worn down unusually fast, restoring their natural height so you can bite and chew normally again. It combines therapeutic, cosmetic and prosthetic dentistry — using composite build-ups, laboratory-made restorations or both.
About the treatment
Our teeth naturally wear over the years, but in some people they wear down unusually fast. This causes a loss of the vertical dimension of the bite: the lower face becomes shorter, the corners of the mouth turn down and the face can look older. Patients may also experience headaches, jaw-joint pain, sensitivity and difficulty chewing.
Common causes include tooth grinding (bruxism), the loss of several teeth, acid reflux, an untreated irregular bite, congenital weakness of the enamel and ageing.
Collapsed bite restoration is one of the most complex procedures in dentistry. Worn teeth are rebuilt using direct composite (the “free-hand” technique), laboratory-made restorations based on a wax-up, prosthetics — or a combination. Treatment takes time and close collaboration between you and your dentist.
