Gum disease treatment in Ashbourne

In short

Gum disease (gingivitis and periodontitis) is an infection of the tissues that hold your teeth in place and the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. Our periodontologist, Dr Adomas Rovas, diagnoses and treats gum disease with deep cleaning, periodontal surgery and gum grafting.

About the treatment

What is gum disease?

Gum disease begins when bacteria in plaque inflame the gums — this early stage is called gingivitis. If it is not treated, it can progress to periodontitis, where the toxins produced by bacteria destroy the connective tissue and bone that support the teeth. Pockets form between the gums and teeth, the gums may recede, and teeth can become loose and eventually fall out.

Because bone loss is not visible to the naked eye, regular dental examinations and professional cleaning are essential. Our periodontologist measures the depth of the gum pockets, takes X-rays and creates a treatment plan tailored to you.

Treatment ranges from non-surgical deep cleaning of the root surfaces to flap surgery, regenerative surgery, crown lengthening and gum grafting for receding gums.
