Save your tooth
Root canal treatment removes infected or inflamed pulp from inside a tooth, cleans and seals the canals, and saves the tooth from extraction. At Ashbourne Dental & Medical we use a dental operating microscope for greater precision, a less invasive procedure and a higher long-term success rate.
About the treatment
Inside every tooth is the pulp — soft tissue containing nerves and blood vessels. When the pulp becomes infected or inflamed, for example from a deep cavity, repeated dental work, a cracked tooth or an injury, it can cause severe pain and lead to an abscess. Root canal treatment removes the damaged pulp, disinfects the root canals and seals them, saving your natural tooth.
We perform root canal treatment using a dental operating microscope. The magnification and light allow your dentist to see the tiniest canals and details inside the tooth, which means more precise cleaning, less damage to healthy tissue and a lower risk of re-infection.
Most root canal treatments are relatively simple procedures with little or no discomfort, completed in one to three visits. Afterwards the tooth is restored with a filling or crown so it can last for many years.

How it works
01
We assess the tooth and take an X-ray to confirm that root canal treatment is needed.
02
Under local anaesthetic, the infected pulp is removed and the canals are cleaned and shaped with the help of the microscope.
03
The canals are disinfected and sealed to prevent bacteria from re-entering.
04
The tooth is restored with a filling or crown, and you receive aftercare advice.

FAQ
Have another question? Call 01 969 0555 or email clinic@ashbournemedical.ie.
No — it is performed under local anaesthetic and is usually no more uncomfortable than a filling. Most patients find that it relieves the pain caused by the infection.
The price depends on the tooth (front, premolar or molar) and whether a microscope is used. See the live price table on this page — fillings and crowns afterwards are priced separately.
The microscope provides strong magnification and light, helping your dentist find and treat every canal precisely. This makes treatment less invasive and reduces the risk of re-infection.
Most treatments need one to three visits, depending on the tooth and the infection.
Saving your natural tooth is almost always the best option. Replacing an extracted tooth with an implant or bridge is usually more complex and expensive.
